How to Activate Automatic Captions in Your Browser

Automatic captions can greatly enhance your browsing experience, making content more accessible. Here’s how you can enable automatic captions (also known as Live Caption) in Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and Microsoft Edge.

Google Chrome

  1. Open Google Chrome: Launch your Chrome browser on your computer.
  2. Go to Settings:
    • Click on the three vertical dots (menu) in the top-right corner of the Chrome window.
    • Select "Settings" from the dropdown menu.
  3. Access Advanced Settings:
    • Scroll down and click on "Advanced" to expand more settings options.
  4. Find Accessibility:
    • Scroll down to the "Accessibility" section.
  5. Enable Live Caption:
    • Toggle the switch next to "Live Caption" to turn it on. This will enable automatic captions for media played in Chrome.

Once Live Caption is enabled, Chrome will automatically generate captions for audio and video content played in the browser. The captions will appear in a small box at the bottom of the screen. You can customize the appearance of the captions in the Chrome settings under "Accessibility".

Mozilla Firefox

As of now, Mozilla Firefox does not have a built-in Live Caption feature like Google Chrome. However, you can use third-party extensions and services to achieve a similar result. One recommended extension is "Web Captioner", which provides real-time captions for media content:

  1. Install Web Captioner:
  2. Activate the Extension:
    • After installation, click on the Web Captioner icon in the browser toolbar and enable it.
  3. Use Web Captioner:
    • Web Captioner will now provide real-time captions for the audio and video content played in your Firefox browser.

Microsoft Edge

Microsoft Edge, built on the Chromium engine, also supports the Live Caption feature similar to Google Chrome. Here’s how to enable it:

  1. Open Microsoft Edge: Launch your Edge browser on your computer.
  2. Go to Settings:
    • Click on the three horizontal dots (menu) in the top-right corner of the Edge window.
This will enable automatic captions for media played in Edge.

Once Live Caption is enabled, Edge will automatically generate captions for audio and video content played in the browser. The captions will appear in a small box at the bottom of the screen. You can customize the appearance of the captions in the Edge settings under "Accessibility".
